Sergio Aguero's injury blow may hand Chelsea the title

The situation with Sergio Aguero doesn’t look good. It’s an injury to his left knee, which he’s had problems with before. Manchester City will have been praying for good news, but it looks like he’ll be out for at least a month. This will play into Jose Mourinho’s hands and could decide the title - as I suggested in this column at the end of October. Aguero’s form has been so hot, Man City can’t help but miss him.

He has been magnificent, defenders have found him impossible to handle. He is scoring goals from anywhere, his finishing is deadly and it only takes him a split second to send a shot flying in. If he is out long-term it would have to make Chelsea favourites. Mourinho likes to be the underdog. He uses that psychology with his players well, so it will be interesting to see how he acts if they stay out in front. With City closing the gap on Chelsea over the weekend to three points, he will try to turn the heat on to Manuel Pellegrini. That is what Mourinho is so good at, getting at his opposition manager. But if Aguero is out for a chunk of the season with his injury, I don’t think Jose will need his mind games.
